Tips for driving less and saving money

You probably notice how much attention people pay to the price of gas. We’d actually like to point out that a slight increase isn’t as big a deal as the media may want you to think. For instance, let’s say your car gets 25 miles per gallon and you drive 15,000 miles a year. This means that every year, you need 600 gallons of gas (15,000/25).

Let’s also assume the price of gas is currently $3.25 and suddenly rises to $3.80—a very steep climb. This will cost you an average of $330 extra a year if it stays stable. We’re not saying that a few hundred dollars a year is insignificant, but odds are, it won’t change your quality of life much, if at all. Plus, the price jump probably won’t be nearly as large as this scenario.

That being said, there’s no reason not to try and save yourself some money. There’s nothing you can do to lower the price. However, you can alter your habits to drive less, saving you money at the pump. And on your insurance premium—car insurance companies use annual mileage to determine rates. Those who drive less, pay less. Additionally, the less you drive, the less likely you are to crash! Here are some quick tips:
  • Car pool
  • Use public transportation
  • Walk
  • Bundle your errands to make fewer trips
  • Look up directions beforehand and/or use a GPS so you're not driving around trying to find your bearing
  • Look at satellite feeds or listen to radio feeds to avoid being surprised by detours
